ICC World Cup 2011 final: India vs Sri Lanka The famous "Dhoni finishes off in style... India lifts the World Cup after 28 years" match was played at Wankhede Stadium. In the 2011 World Cup final, India clashed with Sri Lanka at this stadium. Having won the toss, the Sangakkara-led Lanka set a gigantic target of 275 for the "Men in Blue" to chase down. During the run-chase, India lost the early wicket of star opener Virender Sehwag for a duck. Even, "Master Blaster" Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed for 18 runs and the whole Wankhede Stadium was silenced by Lasith Malinga`s single delivery. Thereafter, Gautam Gambhir stood strong and smashed 97 runs before getting bowled by Thisara Perera. After Gambhir`s dismissal, Team India fans were on the verge of losing World Cup hopes. But Dhoni and Yuvraj`s partnership guided India to their historic second World Cup title. India lifted their second World Cup after the wait of 28 years at Mumbai`s Wankhede Stadium
