The West Bengal Assembly has recently passed `Aparajita` Bill, marking a significant step in the fight against sexual violence. Named in response to the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical Centre, this legislation is a pioneering move by West Bengal, making it the first state to amend central laws related to sexual offenses. The bill introduces several critical reforms, including stricter penalties for rape, enhanced protection for survivors, and expedited judicial processes to ensure faster justice. It also establishes special fast-track courts dedicated to handling such cases. The West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, convened a special 2-day session to accelerate the bill`s passage in response to widespread protests and public outrage. This initiative aims to address the growing demand for more robust measures against sexual crimes and to provide a stronger legal framework for the protection of women.
